Brazil: Why Quality, Patient Safety and Technical Partnerships Are Shaping the Future of MedTech

Brazil is one of the most important MedTech markets in Latin America. At the same time, it is a highly demanding environment: a large public and private healthcare system, significant regional differences, strict regulatory requirements and constant pressure for cost efficiency all shape the market.

Yet despite these challenges, Alexandre Nardi, CEO of FAMI, sees a remarkable transformation taking place. Hospitals and healthcare institutions are increasingly evaluating medical devices and reprocessing solutions based on far more than just the purchase price.

“Reliability, compliance, technical evidence, service, training and long-term performance are becoming more important in the decision-making process – especially in more qualified healthcare institutions,” Alexandre explains.

This evolution is opening new opportunities.

“For companies like FAMI, this creates an important opportunity: to act not only as a manufacturer or distributor, but as a technical partner for hospitals, CSSD departments and surgical centers.”

This partnership-oriented approach is at the heart of FAMI’s work – and, in Alexandre’s view, an essential part of the future of medical technology in Brazil.

The Growing Professionalization of CSSDs

One of the strongest trends Alexandre observes is the increasing professionalization of sterile processing and medical device reprocessing.

Hospitals are paying much greater attention to:

  • Traceability
  • Validated processes
  • Documentation
  • Staff training
  • Compliance with technical standards

At the same time, there is a growing demand for solutions that improve workflow efficiency, reduce risks and support sustainability.

Reusable, durable and technically validated products are becoming increasingly important – especially when they help hospitals reduce waste and improve process control.

Modern Instruments Create New Challenges

As surgery continues to evolve, so do the requirements for reprocessing.

Minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery and advanced endoscopy have significantly expanded treatment possibilities. However, these technologies also make cleaning, inspection and reprocessing much more demanding.

Modern instruments are increasingly complex and delicate, requiring greater attention in:

  • Cleaning
  • Inspection
  • Protection
  • Packaging
  • Reprocessing

For Alexandre, one thing is clear:

“The CSSD is no longer just a support area. It is a strategic department for surgical safety, infection prevention and hospital efficiency.”

Patient Safety Must Come Before the Lowest Price

Brazil remains a highly price-sensitive market. Many hospitals operate under significant budget constraints and must carefully evaluate investments.

However, Alexandre sees a shift in mindset.

“In the past, many purchasing decisions were strongly driven by the lowest price. Today, more institutions understand that the lowest purchase price does not always represent the lowest cost or the safest choice.”

Poor quality, inadequate reprocessing, damaged instruments or a lack of standardization can generate much higher costs later on.

For this reason, FAMI has a clear philosophy:

Patient safety and quality must come first.

Cost efficiency remains essential – but it should be understood as long-term value rather than simply the lowest initial investment.

The challenge is helping customers recognize this difference through technical evidence, data and practical examples from everyday clinical practice.

More Than Products: The Partnership with Entrhal

For FAMI, the partnership with Entrhal Medical means much more than distributing products.

“For FAMI, the partnership with Entrhal represents access to German technical expertise, reliable engineering and solutions that are fully aligned with our own purpose: supporting safer and more efficient sterile processing workflows.”

But Alexandre goes even further:

Entrhal brings more than products. It brings a technical mindset.”

The solutions help hospitals improve cleaning, testing, inspection and process control – areas that are directly connected to patient safety and surgical performance.

At the same time, the partnership strengthens FAMI’s position as a Brazilian MedTech company that combines local market knowledge with international technology.

“We understand the reality of Brazilian hospitals, and Entrhal contributes with specialized solutions that help us raise the technical level of the market.”

Objective Quality Control Is Becoming More Important

In Brazil, there is growing interest in solutions related to instrument cleaning and functional testing.

Alexandre particularly highlights:

  • Steam cleaning solutions
  • Insulation testing devices
  • Light guide and light transmission testing systems

These technologies address real challenges hospitals face every day.

Complex instruments, hard-to-clean areas, hidden failures, damaged insulation and poor light transmission often cannot be reliably detected through visual inspection alone.

Objective testing provides measurable evidence of quality.

“These solutions help CSSD teams and surgical centers move from visual inspection alone to a more technical and evidence-based approach.”

In a market that is increasingly focusing on process validation and risk management, this represents a major step forward.

SteamBox – A Success Story from Brazil

One project Alexandre is particularly proud of is the development of the SteamBox.

The SteamBox was developed by FAMI in Brazil and is closely connected to the successful introduction of Entrhal’s Steamer to the Brazilian market.

The Steamer introduced an important technical concept:

Controlled steam cleaning as a complementary resource to support safer and more effective instrument cleaning workflows.

However, FAMI quickly realized that, for this technology to be successfully adopted in Brazil, it needed to be integrated into a practical, safe and ergonomic workstation that suited the daily reality of Brazilian CSSD departments.

This led to the development of the SteamBox.

It transformed an excellent piece of equipment into an even more complete and user-friendly solution for Brazilian hospitals.

For Alexandre, this project perfectly illustrates the value of the partnership between FAMI and Entrhal:

Combining German technology with Brazilian market knowledge, local engineering and a deep understanding of hospital routines.

“Our partnership is not only about distribution. It is about cooperation, adaptation and developing solutions that create real value and contribute to safer reprocessing practices.”

A Vision for the Future

Alexandre has a clear vision for FAMI.

He wants the company to continue evolving from a traditional manufacturer into a Brazilian MedTech company with global technical relevance.

This means combining:

  • Brazilian manufacturing
  • International standards
  • Sustainability
  • Practical hospital expertise

He also has a broader vision for Latin America.

“Medical technology must become more accessible – but also more technically qualified.”

The region cannot rely solely on low-cost solutions.

Instead, healthcare systems need technologies that are:

  • Safe
  • Durable
  • Evidence-based
  • Sustainable
  • Adapted to the realities of healthcare environments

“FAMI wants to be part of this transformation – connecting local needs with global innovation.”

What Motivates Alexandre Nardi Every Day

Towards the end of the interview, Alexandre becomes more personal.

What motivates him most is the possibility of creating a real impact in healthcare.

“I have worked at FAMI for many years and have seen the company evolve through different phases. Today, my greatest motivation is to help build a company that contributes to patient safety, supports healthcare professionals and brings more technical maturity to the market.”

One area is particularly close to his heart:

Sterile processing.

“Sterile processing is often invisible to patients, but it is fundamental for safe surgery.”

Knowing that products, technical support and partnerships help hospitals reduce risks and improve their processes gives him a strong sense of purpose every day.

One Wish for Healthcare Policy

If Alexandre could make one wish for Brazil’s healthcare policy, it would be this:

Greater emphasis on technical qualification, standardization and long-term value in hospital purchasing decisions.

“If purchasing policies could consider not only price, but also quality, durability, technical evidence, safety and sustainability, the entire healthcare system would benefit – hospitals, healthcare professionals, suppliers and, most importantly, patients.”

Conclusion

Brazil is undergoing an important transformation: quality, patient safety and technical excellence are becoming increasingly important.

For Alexandre Nardi and FAMI, one thing is certain:

The future of medical technology is created where local experience meets global innovation – and where partnerships help make healthcare safer, more efficient and more sustainable.
